There are many big hill sides in the UK with horses carved in them. The sites chosen were because of the white chalk hills only thinly covered with earth. Many centuries ago these were carved in honour of battles or kings.. The one here at Westbury was restored and the white is now made of large concrete slabs to help with low maintenance.
